Today’s outlook: Munawwar Hasan’s funeral, fuel prices soar

Here are some of the new stories we are following today (Saturday):

  • Former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Syed Munawwar Hasan’s funeral prayers will be offered at the Eidgah Ground in Karachi’s North Nazimabad after Zuhr prayers. He passed away on Friday at the age of 78. According to Hasan’s family, he was very sick and under treatment at Imam Clinic. Hasan was recently put on the ventilator after his health worsened.
  • The National Grid has announced that it will supply additional furnace oil and 500 megawatts of electricity to K-Eletric.
  • The federal government is providing 800 megawatts of electricity to K-Electric and is ready to provide an additional 500MW, but physical constraints in the power utility’s system are a major hurdle, a spokesperson for the energy ministry said Friday.
  • The federal government has increased the price of petrol by Rs25.58 per litre effective immediately. A litre of petrol will now sell for over Rs100.
  • A foreigner living in the University of Karachi women’s hostel has filed an FIR at the Mobina Town police station claiming that she has been sexually harassed at the hostel. She said the man attacked her while she was going to the washroom. The varsity spokesperson, Zeeshan Azmat, says males are not allowed to enter the women’s hostel.
  • The government will begin returning money to Pakistanis who had applied for Hajj this year from July 2. The government will get in touch with people via text message.
  • Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has admitted that the provincial government has been testing fewer people for the coronavirus recently. He said this was because Sindh’s free home testing service was halted after many staffers had tested positive for the virus.
